Breast Implant Illness, Chronic Inflammation, and Explant Surgery
A Clinical Conversation with Lauryn Bosstick on The Skinny Confidential Podcast
This conversation took place with Lauryn Bosstick, host of The Skinny Confidential Podcast, alongside her husband and co-host Michael Bosstick. Together, Lauryn and Michael are the founders of DEAR Media, one of the largest independent podcast networks in the world, known for long-form conversations around health, wellness, entrepreneurship, and culture.
What follows is not a sensationalized discussion about breast implants. It is a grounded, clinical, and personal exploration of Breast Implant Illness (BII)—through the lens of Lauryn’s own explant journey and my experience caring for more than 1,500 explant patients.
Why This Conversation Matters
For years, Lauryn did what many health-conscious women do when something feels off. She optimized her diet, exercised consistently, addressed hormones, explored thyroid function, and experimented with supplements and detox protocols.
Yet the symptoms persisted. What made this conversation powerful is not that Lauryn had breast implants—it’s that she asked better questions when everything else failed to provide answers.
That curiosity ultimately led her to explant surgery.
Breast Implant Illness: A Framework, Not a Diagnosis
Breast Implant Illness is not a single disease. It is not diagnosed with one lab test, and it does not present the same way in every patient.
Clinically, BII is best understood as chronic systemic inflammation.
When a foreign body—such as a breast implant—is placed in the body, scar tissue forms around it. This capsule is normal. But in some individuals, that capsule becomes biologically active, continuously stimulating the immune system.
Over time, the body becomes stuck in an inflammatory loop.
“You’re like a hamster on a wheel. Your body is working constantly to get rid of toxins, but it can’t actually finish the job.”
Why Symptoms Can Appear Years Later
One of the most confusing aspects of Breast Implant Illness is timing. Many women feel fine for years—sometimes decades—before symptoms escalate.
Genetics help explain this delay. Each person has detoxification pathways—methylation, glutathione, antioxidant, and vitamin D pathways—that determine how efficiently the body processes inflammation and environmental toxins.
As exposure accumulates over time, detox capacity can be exceeded. When that happens, symptoms accelerate rather than resolve.
How Chronic Inflammation Affects the Body
Chronic inflammation does not stay confined to one system. It affects the entire body.
- Brain fog, headaches, light and sound sensitivity
- Thyroid dysfunction and hormone resistance
- Fluid retention and unexplained weight changes
- Joint pain and chronic fatigue
- Skin rashes, hair loss, and texture changes
- Anxiety, mood changes, and sleep disruption
These symptoms are often treated individually without addressing the underlying inflammatory driver.
Biofilm and the Immune Response
In approximately 35% of explant cases, advanced PCR testing reveals bacterial biofilm surrounding the implant capsule.
Biofilm is not a traditional infection. It does not always cause redness, fever, or abnormal blood work. Instead, it creates a constant immune stimulus.
